This was the definitive redesign of The West Australian in 2004. I worked as project manager on this with James de Vries, Australia’s finest newspaper designer, now working in America. These are my dummy layouts and words for a well-structured, authoritative and boldly formal look. The five-column grid and layout has not been changed, but The West switched in 2012 to a new headline font – a dull, utilitarian condensed sans. However, the new body type is bigger and therefore more readable. I wanted to do this in 2004, but maintaining the word count was deemed more important.
